Create Five Fun Backgrounds with MONO Edge Highlighters

Originally posted @: http://blog.tombowusa.com/2018/05/15/create-five-fun-backgrounds-with-mono-edge-highlighters/

Good morning y’all!  Beth from @creativelybeth here on the blog today to share how to create five fun backgrounds with the brand new Tombow MONO Edge Highlighters!

The new MONO Edge Highlighters are dual-tip highlighters that feature fast-drying ink. They have a broad chisel tip (3.8mm) on one end and an extra-fine bullet tip (0.8mm) on the other. The chisel tip features a unique design with a protective plastic sleeve that helps maintain the shape of the tips even when using metal rulers or stencils.

The unique, vibrant colors are perfect for color-coding and decorating planners, journals, notebooks and study guides. The fine tip works great for underlining text and writing margin notes. Fast drying ink doesn’t smear when highlighted over pencil or ink and doesn’t bleed through most papers. They come in a 6-pack and the colors are Golden Yellow, Pink, Yellow Green, Sky Blue, Red, and Purple.

Here’s what you will need: Tombow MONO Edge Highlighers Tombow MONO J Drawing Pencil – 2H grade Tombow MONO Dust Catch Eraser Marker Paper Ruler Tombow Dual Brush Pen – N15 Black Tombow MONO Drawing Pen, 3 Pack – 01, 03 and 05 Tombow Fudenosuke, Brush Pen, Twin Tip Black/Grey Here’s how to make it:

Before I start on a finished project, I always like to make a color chart and sketch out a bunch of ideas in my idea journal.  Here are two photos that show that process for me.

Fun Background One

Let’s start with circles! Draw circles in rows with the chisel tip of the MONO Edge Highlighters. You can lay in some guidelines with the MONO J Drawing Pencil 2H and a ruler, but I prefer the imperfection. I made each line a different color, but you can mix it up to draw rows of random colored circles. Roughly outline each circle with MONO Drawing Pen 03. Neither my rows nor my circles are perfect, which is okay with me!

Fun Background Two

Next is a color blocked background. For this one I did measure, taking the length of the paper and dividing by six to obtain the width of each block. Then, using the broad edge of the chisel tip, fill in each block with stripes of color.

Sketch in the quote, then ink it in with Dual Brush Pen N15 Black, using the brush tip and the bullet tip. I use my Dual Brush Pens for all types of crafts, so I mark the ones I use for lettering with a piece of washi tape.

Fun Background Three

Stripes and watermelons are up in the number three spot! Start out with Pink triangles and add in the rind with Yellow Green using the chisel tip, then add Purple seeds with the extra fine bullet tip. Fill in with Blue stripes through the background. Add the quote and outline the watermelon with MONO Drawing Pen 01.

Fun Background Four

Up next is the starburst background! To divide the paper into six sections, measure the paper in half horizontally and then draw an X through the center. Color each section a different color, filling in with the chisel tip. Add a fun word or quote with Dual Brush Pen N15 Black.

Fun Background Five

Finally, there is the plaid background. I have to say that this was my favorite! I used a paper napkin from Easter as my inspiration. Incorporating all six of the colors, the chisel tips, and the extra fine bullet tips. Experiment and have fun!

Here is a close up of all five backgrounds:

I hope you have enjoyed how to create five fun backgrounds with MONO Edge Highlighters and you will use my projects as a jumping off point to showcase YOUR Tombow creativity!

5 Tips to Keep Your Journal Organized

Found this great post for you, have fun!! http://blog.tombowusa.com/2018/01/19/5-tips-to-keep-your-journal-organized/

Good morning y’all!  Beth here to share 5 ways to keep your task journal organized in 2018.  Now, I’m not a planner girl, but I love to make lists, so task journaling is a no brainer for me!  I like to keep things quick and easy, but always colorful.  My Tombow supplies are a huge part of the list journal that I have created.

Organization Tip One:

Here is the way I keep my week organized. Write each day boldly in printed capital block letters with the brush tip of the Dual Brush Pen – numbers  025, 195, 373, 452, 603, 703 and 933 are my favorites!  Then, to create interest, letter each day of the week over top of the block letters with MONO Drawing Pen 05.  The space I leave under each heading depends on how many “to-do’s” I have for each day.  Sometimes it’s an entire page!

01-14-18 TOMBOW 5 WAYS TO KEEP YOUR BUJO ORGANIZED BETH WATSON

Organization Tip Two:

Recently I have been on a banner kick, so here are a few examples of how I set up my monthly lists in my journal.  Draw the banner shapes in with MONO Drawing Pens 01, 03 and 05 and then add some color with the bullet tip of a Dual Brush Pen (I used 025, 195, 373, 452, 603, 743 and 933).  I love holidays, so I like to add an icon that represents that month.

01-14-18 TOMBOW 5 WAYS TO KEEP YOUR BUJO ORGANIZED BETH WATSON

Organization Tip Three:

Now, lists don’t have to be dull and boring.  Create a group of images, like these frames, to contain individual lists of things to be done around the house.  Organize each frame to represent a different room in your home.  Add colors that coordinate with each room.  I sketch in the basic shapes with a MONO Drawing Pencil 2H, which is a harder grade pencil that produces a lighter line.  The fun part is creating the individual frame designs with MONO Drawing Pens 01, 03 and 05.  Then erase your pencil lines with the MONO Dust Catch Eraser, which is great on-the-go, because it catches all of the eraser residue!

01-14-18 TOMBOW 5 WAYS TO KEEP YOUR BUJO ORGANIZED BETH WATSON

Organizational Tip Four:

The REAL list maker will make a list to organize their lists.  I do this all of the time!  At the beginning of each month I make a master list (brain dump) of all the possible lists I will need for that month.  Organize them into categories, so they are easier to refer back to when needed.  I love the vivid colors of the TwinTone Bright set of markers and they won’t bleed through your journal pages.  I always use a contrasting color to highlight my tasks once complete.  The MONO Drawing Pens 01, 03 and 05 are perfect to make the lists.  I have to say that I absolutely LOVE the MONO Drawing Pens!  They have sturdy nibs that don’t fray and write very smoothly on any type of paper.

Organizational Tip Five:

Doodles are a fun way to jazz up your bullet or list journals.  They can set a mood, decorate a list header or track your progress.  Using the same doodles to highlight a specific task is a great visual reminder, like taking the dog to the vet or getting your hair cut!  Remember, these are doodles, not works of art, so quick and sketchy is best, using the MONO Drawing Pens 01, 03 and 05.  Accent your doodles with color from the TwinTone Bright and Pastel sets of markers.

1. Planner:

There are a few things you need to consider when choosing a planner:

Size: it depends on your needs and preferences. If you just have a few appointments maybe a mini planner is a good idea. Mini planners are also a good option for students. Big Planners are good for people that also want to use it as a memory planners. Also for people with many responsibilities like school, business, home and children’s activities. Format: hourly, daily, weekly or monthly. I prefer to use the weekly format because I can write all of my family’s appointments.

2. Tombow TwinTone Dual Tip Markers:

These Dual Tip Markers have 2 different tips: a very fine one and a broad tip. I love to use these markers to color code everything on my planner. The fine tip is also perfect for doodling.

3. Tombow Fudenosuke Calligraphy Pen

If you want to practice lettering, the Tombow Fudenosuke is perfect because like the TwinTones they don’t bleed through planner pages. The Fudenosukes also come with a super thin ruler that you can put inside your planner.

Every month I create a plan to reach my goals. Then I work on my monthly calendar. From the monthly calendar I move on to the weekly spread.

10 Color Combinations To Create Magical Galaxies

Found this great post for you, have fun!! http://blog.tombowusa.com/2017/09/15/galaxy-color-combos/

10 Galaxy color combinations you can create with @tombowusa Dual Brush Pens! by @punkprojects #tombow #tombowusa #galaxy

Wave your hand if you love galaxies! Katie here and I have been in love with the galaxy trend for a while now and when I saw that Tombow was releasing a galaxy themed set for the Dual Brush Pens I got major heart eyes!

If you missed the release – Tombow recently released two new Dual Brush Pens sets: Galaxy and Pastel!

Today I am showing you different color combinations you can use with the Galaxy and Pastel set to create 10 different galaxies.

How to create a galaxy using the Splash technique:

Before I get to the color combinations, here’s a mini tutorial on how to create a splash galaxy using the Dual Brush Pens. This is my favorite technique that I learned from fellow design team member Marie Browning!

Supplies: Dual Brush Pens: Galaxy Set, Pastel Set Blending Kit Glossy Photo Paper White Pen Step one:

Apply Dual Brush Pen ink onto the Blending Palette. You can scribble the different colors around however you like, different ink placement will create different galaxies.

Step two:

Spritz the Blending Palette with water, this will cause the ink to bead up and pool.

Step three:

Press a piece of glossy photo paper face down onto the blending palette. You can swirl it around a little bit to help transfer the ink to the photo paper.

Step 4:

Peel back the photo paper and reveal the galaxy! Photo paper is designed so that the ink dries instantly. So wipe away any remaining water and you’ve got a starry scene!

Design Team member Jennie shared another fantastic way to create the galaxy look in this post.

Galaxy Color Combinations:

The Galaxy Dual Brush Pen set comes with 9 colors, but you can combine them in different ways to create such a variety of galaxies. Here are the combinations I came up with:

Dual Brush Pen colors: 606, 725, N25

When creating galaxies, It’s likely that the markers you first grab for wouldn’t be pastels, but why not? Pastels can create amazing galactic scenes just as well as the deeper colors.

Here are a few of the color combinations I created using the Pastel set, as well as the N25 Dual Brush Pen.

Dual Brush Pen colors: 991, 723, 620, N25

For this pastel galaxy silhouette I actually used All of the colors from the Pastel Dual Brush Pen set. The pastel colors do make for a very light galaxy, but I’m loving the soft effect they give.

So are you team Galaxy or Team Pastel?  I love both, so I’ll just say that I am #TeamTombow!

Grab the new Dual Brush Pen sets here: Galaxy, Pastel. Each set comes with 9 colors, and a colorless blender!!

Create Butterfly Sun Catchers with Cricut

Found this great post for you, have fun!! http://blog.tombowusa.com/2017/08/19/create-butterfly-sun-catchers-with-cricut/

Good morning y’all!  Beth here today to share a tutorial on how to create butterfly sun catchers.  This is an easy project thanks to my new Cricut Explore Air™ 2 and my Tombow MONO Aqua Liquid Glue!  A big THANK YOU goes out to Cricut for supplying the Tombow Design Team with the Explore Air™ 2 Machines and accessories.

Having never owned a digital cutting machine before, I have to admit that I unboxed it and then let it intimidate me from the corner of my studio. Deciding later that this was completely silly.  I watched a few video tutorials, read a step-by-step blog post and then turned the machine ON!  I had it up and cutting in less than an hour!  Cricut’s website walks you through the entire process.  This project has actually been in my head for a while, but I could never find the correct size butterflies, so well done Cricut!

CREATE BUTTERFLY SUN CATCHERS WITH CRICUT BETH WATSON CUTTING:

Open the Cricut Design Space and select Picturesque Butterfly (#M3F6B3).  Enlarge image to approximately 10″ wide and 6″ high.  Click duplicate, position second image under first image and save.  Click on Make It to see if both images fit completely on one mat.  If not, go back, shrink image slightly, save and click Make It again.  Load mat with 12″ by 12″ black cardstock.  Follow the prompts and cut two images. Gently remove the cut image by peeling back the mat and lifting gently with the Spatula.  If you peel the cardstock from the mat, it will bend and crease.

CREATE BUTTERFLY SUN CATCHERS WITH CRICUT BETH WATSON

Repeat above steps with Paper Lace Butterfly (#M454E1), isolating just the top layer of the cut file.

CREATE BUTTERFLY SUN CATCHERS WITH CRICUT BETH WATSON

EMBELLISHING:

Trace each butterfly onto separate sheets of plain white paper using a MONO Drawing Pencil F grade.  Place a 10″ by 6″ piece of plastic on top. My plastic is recycled packaging that I have hoarded saved, but transparency sheets from the office supply store would work as well.

CREATE BUTTERFLY SUN CATCHERS WITH CRICUT BETH WATSON

For the first butterfly, I selected a Monarch Butterfly inspired orange color palette of Dual Brush Pens 905 Red, 925 Scarlet, 933 Orange and 985 Chrome Yellow.

Moving from darkest to lightest, scribble on the plastic in a random fashion, overlapping colors slightly. Squeeze out a quarter size dollop of MONO Aqua Liquid Glue onto the palette from the Blending Kit and gently apply to the plastic using a single stroke (with an old paintbrush).  Pick up more MONO Aqua and apply additional strokes until all exposed areas are filled.  The MONO Aqua blends the Dual Brush Pen colors on the plastic in a stained glass effect. Let dry and apply additional layers until you are please with the depth of color.

CREATE BUTTERFLY SUN CATCHERS WITH CRICUT BETH WATSON

The second butterfly has a more intricate pattern, so apply the MONO Aqua directly to the plastic with a clean paintbrush and allow to dry. Using the Dual Brush Pen Bright Set, individually color each section of the butterfly a different rainbow inspired shade.  Gently apply a top coat of MONO Aqua.  Make sure to clean your brush often to prevent the colors from blending too much and becoming muddy.

CREATE BUTTERFLY SUN CATCHERS WITH CRICUT BETH WATSON

FINISHING:

Roughly cut out the colored plastic with scissors, making sure that none is exposed around the edges of the butterfly images.

CREATE BUTTERFLY SUN CATCHERS WITH CRICUT BETH WATSON

Carefully apply a thin bead of MONO Aqua around all of the cut outs on the back of the first butterfly image.  Place the rough cut plastic on top.  Then apply additional MONO Aqua on the plastic.  Flip the second layer of the first butterfly image over and attach, so that you have a mirror image and all of the cut outs match up.  Repeat above steps with second butterfly image.  Set aside to let glue dry.

CREATE BUTTERFLY SUN CATCHERS WITH CRICUT BETH WATSON

Once dry, punch a small hole at the top of each butterfly.  String ribbon or twine through the hole and tie to make a loop.  Hang with a suction cup in a bright window or on a sliding glass door.

Here is a detail of the stained glass effect – simply gorgeous!

I hope that you will be inspired to create butterfly sun catchers.  It’s a quick and easy project that would be fun to complete with the kiddos!
